Tracking-Following Human Scent

This class will start with the fundamentals of teaching your dog to use their nose!  Tracking is a natural activity for all dogs and puppies, tuning their skills to follow human scent is fun and great exercise for both owner and dog.  All classes will be held outside, so please dress appropriately and wear sturdy footwear.  Dogs will need a harness, flat buckle collar, 6 foot leash-humans will need warm clothing and a baggie full of soft, training treats.  Other equipment will be provided.  Puppies are encouraged and welcome as are all dog friendly dogs or instructor permission.  Prior experience or obedience training not necessary, but a nice sit will help your dog get started.

Do you lose contact with your dog when you go for a walk, go to a trail, travel to the park . . .  This course is for dogs who lose their ability to focus in new or stimulating situations.  Loosely based on Lesley’s McDevitt’s Control Unleashed Course, with some of our own modifications, we will work on teaching control, relaxation and communication with our easily distracted/frightened/reactive dogs.  Understanding dog body language, using calming signals, touch and targeted games, we will help our dogs learn self control, gain confidence and build a working relationship that will help both dog/handler better communicate.

Pre-Requisite:  Intro to Dog Body Language I or instructor’s permission

Nosework is the newest Dog Sport and is is FUN!  Your dog starts out finding their favorite thing-food or a toy.  As they get better at finding, we make the game harder.  When they get really good at finding, we change the game from finding their favorite thing to finding a specific odor.  This game let’s dogs do what they do best-use that wonderful nose!  Any dog/handler can do this sport and it is great for confidence building for both dog/handler!
