What is “Positive Reinforcement” Training?

Positive reinforcement or “clicker training” is a training method based on the proven methods of rewards based training using operant and classical conditioning (remember Psyc 101?)  We know that using basic motivational techniques create a strong bond between you and your dog and that bond is strengthened every day by using a non-force, reward based teaching system.

Rewards based training teaches by rewarding wanted behaviors and creates a dog that is excited and happy to train, learn and live in harmony with their people.  By learning the communication skills that your dog understands, you are in the position to increase the behaviors you want and end the behaviors you don’t want.

We use rewards that include food, toys and interactions.  We will teach you how and when to use them as effective teaching tools enable you to communicate your leadership role (not dominant role) and establish a open line of learning for you both.  By learning how and when to reward and when not to reward, learning is quick and fun-both you and your dog will look at your training time as game time and your dog will be disappointed when you sessions are done!

Using a variable reward schedule creates a lottery of behavior opportunities for your dog to succeed and you may find yourself wondering how there could be any other way to train!
